The Velata Raclette

As you may recall way back early in this blog I said I wouldn't promote a product unless I felt strongly about.  Well, tonight I used the Velata Raclette for the first time, and I REALLY liked it.

A little history - raclette is a Swiss tradition and is quite popular in Europe.  The basic idea is that you cook your meat and veggies on top and you melt cheese underneath to pour on top of the meat and veggies.

At first I was resistant to the Velata raclette because if the price($140), but I thought I need one for display at the expo.  Well, the darn thing sold out before I even ordered and barely became available in time for last weekend.  I was able to get it for half price since I tacked out in with the rest of my order for the event.  Score!

I have to say it was very popular at the event.  I think I will book a few parties because people want it.  However, most people weren't turned off by the price, but everybody likes a good deal.  One woman was really excited about it because her son lives in Switzerland and had introduced her to the idea, and she loves it.

So, I had to try it.  It was so stinking easy and super yummy.  Joseph cut up onions and peppers, and I cut up chicken and steak.  I put it all on the non-stick top which is half griddle and half grill and sprinkled Velata's Santa Maria BBQ rub on all of it.

While it cooked I sliced up blocks of cheese - pepper jack, mozzarella, and Colby jack. Then I put the cheese in the little dishes that slide underneath to let it melt.

Joseph warmed tortillas in the microwave and piled in the veggies, meat, and cheese.

Yum-0!!!!

I can see how this would be tons of fun with a party or family gathering because you could have all these ingredients available for everybody to do their own thing.

I'm looking forward to using it for breakfast and dessert and other supper ideas.  I'm curious about the granite top too.  I've heard it's good for steaks on the unit or for ice cream mixing after freezing it.

My only complaint at this point would be size.  It doesn't collapse, so I'm not sure how I'll store it.  Who knows - it may become such a staple that we are rarely not using it.  ;)
